Background
The International Development Committee of the Sarnia YMCA has a long history having its beginnings in 1943 with the "World Service" Committee. The committee back then involved itself in doing much the same type of work as we do today, i.e. raising funds for overseas projects, partner exchanges and education here in Canada. The Committee today is a fellowship of volunteers and staff committed to education, local engagement and global development. For the past 25 years, we have financially supported projects at the Thailand YMCA's in Bangkok, Chiangmai and Chiangrai and most recently we have contributed to the assistance of refugees at the Burma/Thailand border. Visits by committee members and staff, over the years have assisted in training and communication.
In 2002, the International Development Committee of the YMCA of Sarnia Lambton entered a partnership with the Guatemala YMCA, specifically helping the community of Comalapa.
During the year, the committee is involved in different events. The major fundraising venture for the committee is the Annual Poinsettia Sale. The committee is also instrumental in organizing the Peace Week Celebrations.
