Do you have a general inquiry about the YMCA's Language Skills Program?
The Language Skills Program is English Language Training for Newcomers to Canada.
We offer Literacy to CLB 4 Classes, Monday though Friday.
The YMCA Language Skills Program (LSP) is a Free English as a Second Language program for eligible adult newcomers. To be eligable, you must be 18 years and older and must be a Permanent Resident, COnvention Refugee, on a special Minister'sThe YMCA LSP teaches listening, speaking, reading and writing based on the Canadian Language benchmarks. In the classes you will learn basic to more advanced language skills that will be useful in your everyday life. For instance, you can learn;
- how to navigate the computer
- how to book an appoitment
- how to talk to your child's teacher
- how to explain your health concerns to a doctor
- how to prepare for the Canadian labour market, and so much more.
Program offers continous enrollment through two semesters per year, and clients progress at their own pace using the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and the Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).
What can the Langauge Skills Program teach you?
Each class is tailored to the needs of the learners based on an overall needs assessment. We want each class to best fit the needs of the learners, so topics are picked by you and your classmates. We follow the LINC National Curriulum Guidelines, focusing on the following themes:
- Canadian Workplace Culture
- Employment Rediness
- Community Connections
- Digital Literacy
- Financial and Numerical Literacy
- Health and Safety
- Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), and
- Canadian Culture and Life
Eligability Requirements:
LINC - Language Instrcuton for Newcomers to Canada (IRCC Funded Programs):Adults 18 years and older and must be a Permanent Resident, Convention Refugee, on a special Minister´s Permit, or possess an eligibility letter for Permanent Residence from IRCC
ESL - English as a Second Language (MLITSD Funded Programs):Adults 19 years of age and older who are Refugee Claimants, Convention Refugees, Government Sponsored Refugees, Landed Immigrants, or Canadian Citizens.
Care for Newcomer Children is available to individuals who meet the eligibility requirements.
Transportation Assistance is avaiable to individuals who meet the eligibility requirements.
What do I do while waiting to get into a class?
- Join a conversation circle, contact roxanne.gilroymachado@ymcaswo.ca
- Learn on your own with Mauril or CANAvenue. These are free digital platofrms provided by ORCC that you can access from any device
- Participate in activities offered by a Settlement Agency. This will give you the opportunity to use your English.
