PEACE WEEK
Peace in its many forms has long been a concern of the worldwide YMCA movement. At the World council Meeting of 1981, two steps were taken to draw particular attention to the concern: the adoption of the "Statement on Peace" and the decision to declare YMCA World Peace Week during the second week in November of every year. Now YMCA's in 127 countries around the world annually join together to observe YMCA Peace Day while Canada YMCA's devote an entire week toward Peace activities.
During the week local Associations from across Canada are encouraged to promote activities and educational programs to help people explore peace from a personal, community, and international perspective. Each year a local Association works with YMCA Canada to develop support materials for use during YMCA World Peace Week. (link YMCA Canada site) In 1987, the YMCA of Fredericton took that responsibility and developed the idea of the YMCA Peace Medallion. Now, each year during Peace Week, Associations throughout Canada award the medallion to individuals or groups in their communities who, without any special resources, demonstrate in their lives and activities the values expressed in the World Alliance of YMCA's 1981 Statement on Peace. Each year the Sarnia Lambton YMCA International Committee accepts nominations from the public for the peace medallion. (highlight 'peace medallion' for a link to the nomination form) The deadline for nominations is September 30 of each year. The medallion is awarded at a special event held during Peace Week, which is generally the third week of November.
