When Community Comes Together: A Story of Pride and Belonging
In our School Age Program at Emily Stowe in Norwich, children recently had an opportunity to explore what inclusion, respect, and belonging truly mean in action.
Through guided conversations with YMCA educators, children asked thoughtful questions, shared their perspectives, and reflected on how they can support one another with kindness and understanding.
What stood out most was how the children chose to respond.
They gathered chalk and moved to the playground, creating their own vibrant display of support − drawing rainbows and hearts, and writing messages like “love is love,” “peace,” and “be kind.” They also created a bulletin board reflecting what it means to feel safe, accepted, and supported.
This was a powerful, child-led expression of inclusiveness and care. In this moment, the children didn’t just learn about Pride − they practiced it through small but meaningful acts of kindness.
At the Y, we are proud to create environments where every child feels seen, valued, and connected − because we are truly greater together. Even in challenging moments, we have the opportunity to ignite understanding and help every individual discover their potential.
