At Sarnia’s CANstruction event, one display stood out: a giant Game Boy built entirely from canned food.Behind the colourful structure was a team of newcomer youth from the YMCA’s YMAP program, whose creativity and teamwork helped spark an idea that grew over months of planning and collaboration.

What began as a simple Valentine’s Day activity at our Newcomer Children’s Program in London quickly grew into something far more meaningful.Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and educators came together to create handmade Valentines for our neighbours at Horizon Place Retirement Living − a small gesture meant to spread a little joy.

Nearly a decade ago, I was a single mother, recently graduated from university, without a job and relying on family support to get by. When I was finally offered a full-time, entry-level position at a marketing firm, I was thrilled, yet overwhelmed.

In Fall 2025, the construction of a new 40-foot by 20-foot outdoor pavilion was completed at the Sarnia-Lambton YMCA Jerry McCaw Family Centre. The project was generously supported by The Judith & Norman Alix Foundation.
