Thanks to the generous support of the Sarnia Rotary Club, aquatic leadership training opportunities at the Jerry McCaw Family Centre YMCA are being offered free of charge! 

These courses help participants build valuable leadership, lifesaving, and aquatic skills while removing financial barriers to participation. Available courses may vary throughout the year, so check back regularly for current offerings.

Current Course Offerings

Intermediate First Aid

October 17 & 18, 2026
9:00am-5:00pm

Intermediate First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Intermediate First Aid incorporates all of Basic First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid. The first aid program is not restricted to aquatic candidates. This is a Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid and CPR level C. Intermediate First Aid manual is optional, but are available for purchase at the membership desk.

Prerequisites: must be 13 years old on the last day of the course.

Bronze Cross

November 7,8,14, & 15, 2026
9:00am - 3pm

This program starts the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as an assistant Lifeguard.  Candidates will strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.  Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies.  

Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid with CPR-B or Standard First Aid with CPR-C (need not be current).

National Lifeguard Recert

December 6, 2026
9:00am-5:00pm

National Lifeguard certification is current for 2 years and is recertified by completing a National Lifeguard recertification exam. The recertification may require 6 - 8 hours depending on the number of candidates.

Prerequisites: Previous completion of the National Lifeguard Certification
