The Heart of the Y in Action

Seniors receiving valentines

What began as a simple Valentine’s Day activity at our Newcomer Children’s Program in London quickly grew into something far more meaningful.

Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and educators came together to create handmade Valentines for our neighbours at Horizon Place Retirement Living − a small gesture meant to spread a little joy.

Initially, the cards were going to be dropped off at the front desk. Instead, Horizon Place staff graciously invited us to personally deliver them to residents. The experience was truly special. Watching seniors smile as they received the cards − and pause to admire the children’s artwork − was a heartfelt reminder of how powerful it can be to know someone is thinking of you.

The spirit of the project soon reached beyond our Newcomer Children’s Program. At the North London Education Centre, adult language learners were exploring themes of social connections, relationships, and neighbourhoods. They embraced the opportunity to take part, thoughtfully writing Valentine messages of their own to the seniors at Horizon Place. For many, it was a chance to practice language and writing skills while also giving back and connecting with their community.

What started as a simple craft became a centre‑wide moment of connection − bringing together young children, educators, adult learners, and seniors through a shared act of kindness.

Moments like these reflect the heart of the YMCA: creating welcoming spaces where people of all ages feel connected, supported, and valued. We look forward to finding more opportunities to reach out, support others, and live out our values in meaningful ways − one small gesture at a time.
